Kick'n The Kidneys

A kidney stone is made up of minerals and proteins that have broken down in the urine.  The most common type is made from calcium deposits but stones may also be made up of magnesium and ammonia, or they can be formed from uric acid.  Some of the symptoms can include;
Persistent, penetrating pain in the side generally felt down lower by the hips
There is generally a burning sensation during urination
There can be blood seen in the urine
And the urine is generally bad or strong smelling and appears cloudy

It is extremely important to drink plenty of water to help pass the stones and aid in dissolving them.
Clear, unsweetened cranberry juice is a good choice to aid in this process.    A Hot tea made from Corn Silk, Parsley and Slippery Elm Bark is also a good choice.  Using a mixture of Castor oil and mixed with a few drops of lavender, juniper and chamomile essential oils and then placed over the kidneys and covered with a hot water bottle or hot rice sock is also very beneficial.

A good essential oil recipe would be to mix the following ingredients together and take a minimum of 5 times.  Ingest the mixture upon rising, then with each meal, and before bed time daily to help dissolve and pass the stones.  Drink 4 to 6 ounces of the mixture each time.

Mix      the juice of 1 large whole lemon with
1 Tablespoon of Raw Honey or black strap molasses
In         8 ounces of DISTILLED WATER add the following Essential Oils
10 drops of Helichrysum
            10 drops of Geranium
            10 drops of Juniper
            10 drops of Lemongrass

Remember Rosemary

The two functions that are unique to us as humans are our abilities for memory and recall.  Our brains have an almost infinite capacity, which is far beyond what we actually use and experts say that most of us use about only 5 percent of our brain power.  Slips of the memory and lost thoughts have been a human concern since man has existed.   How many times have you wished that you could tap into the human potential for enhanced memory and recall?
Medieval herbalists believed that a number of herbs were useful for enhancing the memory and early documents contain many references.  They provide modern day researchers with directional clues and studies conducted over the past twenty or so years have begun to link decreased mental function, especially which associated with aging, to a cascade of changes in the body leading to insufficiency in memory.  Today, we know that several herbs may indeed be great memory enhancers.
Rosemary, traditionally considered the herb of remembrance, is currently an important herbal subject of antioxidant research and may have a role in treating Alzheimer’s disease.   Long before Shakespeare’s Ophelia said “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.”   The concept of rosemary for remembrance had persisted in records for at least five centuries previous.
Rosemary or Rosmarinus Officinalis contains more than a dozen antioxidant compounds, some of which are in high concentrations.  Researchers have linked oxidative stress to Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative process associated with devastating memory loss, personality changes and the loss of some motor functions.  Aging itself, according to the medicinal plant specialist James A. Duke, could simply be a lifetime’s worth of oxidation damage.  Antioxidant compounds including those found in rosemary may be an important key in combating memory loss.
Studies have shown that rosemary exerts its antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals.  A growing body of literature points to the usefulness of controlling free radicals to prevent and possibly treat such conditions as heart disease, eye diseases, arthritic tissue damage, and stress produced immune system suppression, as well as to aid in retarding the aging process.   Reduced blood flow to the brain as a result of cardiovascular changes related to aging can lead to short term memory loss.
Essential oil of Rosemary is obtained from the fresh stalks, leaves and flowers of the plant.  Rosemary is typically from Spain, France, Yugoslavia and Japan.   The fragrance is clear, strong, and stimulating, and is easily absorbed through the skin.  It stimulates the mind, body, adrenals, and memory.  Rosemary treats general weakness, mental fatigue, and sore muscles.  Rosemary oil is helpful for all diseases that result from a reduction of the functions of the nervous system.   It is a strong stimulant and will help to clear the mind of confusion or doubt.
It is a wonderful essential oil to use in your morning bath or shower because it is both physically and mentally stimulating helping to start the day out on a great note.  Long known for its wonderful addition to cooking recipes, Rosemary enhances everything from meat to vegetables.   Essential oil of Rosemary can be used in much the same way as the fresh or dried herb when cooking.
The jury is still out on just how beneficial Rosemary is in actually enhancing memory, but its confirmed antioxidant activity suggests a scientific basis for its role in history as the herb “for remembrance” For those of us who have used and loved Rosemary over the years, both in our cooking as well as medicinally, this information is not new but reaffirms our knowledge that Rosemary is a key herb for better health and longevity.

A Thought for Food

How would you like to have a year round pantry or kitchen that is constantly stocked with the freshest herbs?  When you become accustomed to using essential oils for cooking purposes, you can experience herbs any time of the year regardless of the weather.
There is nothing like the use of fresh herbs in cooking and the use of essential herbs can be the next best alternatives.
The most intense concentration of the the plant essence is contained in the oils that are extracted and can be used for cooking, many are safe to use with appropriate guidelines.  The guidelines would include using only pure, natural essential oils, NEVER SYNTHETICS, in the preparation of food products.  May sure, when using essential oils in cooking, to only use a few drops at a time or at the most a fraction of a teaspoon.  If you are allergic to an ingredient, do not ingest an essential oil that has been derived from that ingredient.  Never use or ingest essential oils if you are pregnant without consulting with your primary care provider.  The last guideline that I would like to leave here is do not drink essential oils straight from the bottle.  It is in the using and experimenting that you will begin to get an idea of how much to use.  Start simple with just a drop or two in your recipe and then taste to see how much more to add;  remember that you can always add more if needed.
Here is a simple way to start using essential oils in food preparation.  Infuse flavor into cooking oils by adding a few drops of essential oil to pure virgin olive oil, peanut or sesame seed oil and then use the oil to dress salads, or toss with pasta.  You can use infused oils to marinade foods as well, in the same way you would use dried herbs and spices.  The difference that many dried herbs can have a musty smell as well as taste whereas essential oils capture the aroma and flavor as its peak.
Essential oils such as cinnamon can be mixed with butter and spread on toast.  You are limited only by your imagination as you prepare wonderful surprises for your loved ones and friends.  Feel free to leave some feed back about your experiments.  From time to time I will be leaving some delicious ideas of my own.

Summer First Aid

With the heat of Summer almost upon us we need to be watchful for Heat Exhaustion!
Heat exhaustion is caused by over exposure to high temperatures or being over-active in hot weather.  Although heat exhaustion usually occurs outdoors, a person can be overcome in a hot, poorly ventilated room or workplace.
Unchecked, heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, or what has been called sunstroke, this is a life threatening situation.
A heat exhaustion victim sweats, losing fluids and electrolytes, BUT the evaporation of the sweat prevents the body temperature to rise.  Other signs can include pale and clammy skin, weakness, nausea, headaches, and muscle cramping.  The victim will feel fatigued and if exposure continues with out slowly cooling the body and replenishing fluids, the victim may collapse or faint.
Remember that in heatstroke, sweating is absent or very slight, the pulse is rapid, the skin flushed, and the victim is lethargic or unconscious and usually shows signs of disorientation, they may even have a seizure.  Then the body temperature will escalate.
Treatment is important, move them to a cool, shady place that is preferably breezy.  Lay them down, loosen the clothing and place cold, wet towels on the forehead and the back of the neck.  Essential Oil of Peppermint cools the body from the core outward but never let is come close to the eyes, use on the back of the neck and the pulse points.  Essential Oil of Helichrysum will quickly oxygenate the body at the cellular level.  If you are in the mountains and have access to fresh aspen leaves they can be chewed on to help over come these symptoms.  Most mountain streams also have horsetail rods or watercress greens growing along side, they are great for rehydration and electrolyte balancing.
Give them small amounts of cool (NOT ICE COLD) fluids.  If possible add 1 teaspoon of salt per quart of liquid and give small amount at frequent intervals to help rehydrate the body.
Heat exhaustion is something to be constantly aware of during the hot summer activities.
Be safe and have fun.

Crazy Chicory

Cichorium intybus, or Chicory has been used for thousands of years, both for its medicinal properties as well as its culinary delights.  This beautiful plant is a member of the very large compositae family and has a long history in the world.  Egyptian papyrus scrolls list it as a medicinal plant more than 6,000 years ago and herbalists of the Middle Ages relied on its healing powers to treat many complaints of the liver, gallbladder and spleen, as well as edema and weak hearts.  The medicinal effects of Chicory are similar to that of dandelion, helping to stimulate the appetite and support proper liver functions.  Chicory also promotes saliva and bile production, as well as proper elimination of uric acid making it a valuable herb for relieving gout and rheumatism.

But did you know that this crazy plant is considered a vegetable in Europe and has been used in many recipes since the fourteenth century?  This plant adds nutrients, visual appeal and flavor to many dishes.  It can be eaten either raw or cooked and contains protein, carbohydrates, inulin, and natural fructose.  The crazy little Chicory is an excellent source of vitamin A, folic acid, potassium, vitamin C, pantothenic acid and the trace minerals of copper, iron, magnesium, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and zinc.  Chicory root shoots, or endive are very edible and equally healthy.  Chicory not only aids in digestion, but it also helps to gently cleanse the intestines.  It can therefore be considered an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

Chicory root was roasted and used as a coffee substitute in times of war and financial hardship.  The root has a bitter, coffee like taste but it lacks the volatile oils and caffeine.  Chicory grows wild almost every where, but it is also easy to cultivate.  Look for a plant with short stems and green serrated leaves that may look a lot like dandelions.  The leaves should be gathered in the spring and summer.  The plant's blue flowers are very attractive in salads and are edible.  Use the leaves in sandwiches, or mince and add them fresh to cottage or cream cheese for a delicious spread.  The leaves can also be used as a seasoning that will add depth to soups, salads and white sauces.  Chicory leaves are also a tasty complement to many fish and chicken dishes.

Chicory Miso Soup
1 lb of fresh young chicory leaves
4 minced cloves of garlic
2 Tbsp of good olive oil
1/2 cup of shopped onion
1 oz or about 1 Tbsp of minced, peeled, fresh ginger root
6 cups of vegetable or chicken broth
1/4 cup of red miso paste
2 large peeled, sliced parsnips
1 good size piece of peeled, chopped Chicory Root
1-2 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar
feta cheese
croutons
chives  (optional)

Saute the garlic, onions and ginger in the olive oil until slightly translucent in a medium soup or stock pot.  Stir in the vegetable or chicken broth and miso paste.  Bring to a boil.  Add the parsnip and chicory root and simmer until the roots are soft.  Add the chicory leaves and 1 Tbsp of vinegar.  Taste and, if you wish, add more vinegar, 1 tsp at a time until the soup reaches your desired acidic flavor.  Ladle into bowls and add crumbled feta cheese and a few croutons as garnish.

Keeping a Pulse on Your Health

Have you ever wondered why a health care provider might be taking a reading of your pulse?  In main stream medicine, the radial artery, which can be found on each wrist is examined and many people think that this is somehow only related to the functions of the heart or respiration's however it doesn't end there.

Pulse diagnosis is a primary component of traditional Chinese medicine, as well as Ayurvedic medicine and has been practiced for more than 2,500 years.  This valuable tool can provide clues to the health of the internal organs and allow practitioners to them determine the best course of treatment.  The quality of the pulse allows the practitioner to identify many different areas of health and health related complaints.

A weak pulse can be a sign of an internal deficiency that is causing a loss of immunity and vitality.  This type of pulse is thought to be slow and weak if there are fewer than four normal beats per breath cycle and can indicate an illness that is caused by the body being to cold, or a possible viral infection.  A deep pulse is one that can be sensed only when firm pressure is exerted.  It indicates that an internal illness is becoming a chronic condition.  Assessing the depth, over all rhythm and strength can enable a practitioner of assess the flow of energy and determine the quality of yin and yang within the body.  The type of pulse explained above is suggestive of and imbalance of yin.

An imbalance of yang would be a when the pulse is considered rapid, or more than five normal beats per breath cycle.  This can signal an illness with symptoms such as the flu accompanied by fevers or heat.  This is when the body's defenses are triggered.  Some times these triggers can also be based in the "fight or flight" emotions.

Three unique levels of pressure are related to the pulse quality in each of the six pulse points.  These points correspond to an internal organ system.  A strong pulse indicates a state of excess, while a weak pulse may be a sign of deficiency.

The pulse is taken with the index, middle and ring fingers at three locartions along the radial artery, just above the wrist.  On the left arm, the first position relates tothe heart; the second point is linked to the liver; and the third position coincides with the kidneys.  On the right arm, the first position corresponds to the lungs; the second position relates to the spleen and the third point matches the kidneys.  The superficial level indicates external influences and suggest problems on the surface of the body.  The moderate level is where a normal, or harmonious, pulse should be detected.  The deep level suggests an internal problem, or infection.

The idea of yin and yang is central to the many different philosophies of alternative medicines.  An imbalance in these opposing, yet complememntary, forces can result in illness, pain and emotional trauma.  Monitoring the pulse for depth, overall shape and quality while paying attention to the depth, overall shape speed, length, rhythm and strength can help to assess the flow of enerby to and from each of the internal organs.

Take time to look, listen and feel the health and well being of yourself and your loved ones.  Take the time to check your pulse, you might learn a thing or two that you didn't expect.  Not to mention that it can be a very cost effective way to monitor your health.

More About Adrenal Fatigue & CFS

In my last post I talked about Adrenal Fatigue which can also be a contributing factor in CFS or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

One British study has found that people with CFS had below normal blood levels of magnesium!  People with CFS as well as Adrenal Fatigue have enzyme deficiencies that hamper the cells' ability to convert food into energy and extra magnesium in the diet will improve these enzyme function.  Magnesium, like potassium, is pumped into the cell structures and so there should be higher concentration inside the cell than there is in the blood stream.  When the mechanism does not work properly, people with CFS and Adrenal Fatigue  will experience muscles aches and pains, as well as low energy levels, even hair loss and symptoms similar to those that are associated with thyroid problems.  Before starting magnesium therapy talk with your nutritional or health care provider as too much magnesium can cause loose bowels or diarrhea.  A chelated form of magnesium, called magnesium glycinate is more rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore it doesn't cause many digestive problems.  This type of magnesium tends to be drawn into the cells more quickly where it is needed the most.

The B-Complex vitamins help support the adrenal glands, as well as support the central nervous system, which in turns helps us to cope more efficiently with stress in general.  We use, or lose a lot of our body's stores of the B-Complex vitamins when we are stressed and so we need to be conscientious about replenishing them.  These vitamins are also involved in energy production, which makes them essential for people with Adrenal Problems and CFS.

Remember that everyone gets tired and feeling run down, but people with these problems aren't just tired once in a while.  People who feel like they are constantly exhausted, experience reoccurring flu like symptoms, such as painful lymph nodes or problems concentrating with bouts of confusion and forgetfulness should consider this as a possibility.  While children and older people are not immune to this problem, it will most commonly target people in their late twenties and thirties.  Working to boost your body's natural immune system is key!

An Adrenal Fatigue Primer

99% of the people on the planet will admit to feel overwhelmed by stress or exhausted for no reason at different times in their lives however, research has shown that 8 out of 10 Americans suffer from some form of adrenal fatigue.

Adrenal Fatigue is a decrease in the ability of the adrenal glands to carry out their normal functions.  These little glands sit like small "elf shaped caps" right above the kidneys and are designed to mobilize the body's "flight or fight" response to physical or emotional stress through the hormones that help regulate energy,  Their primary responsibility is to govern the body's adaptation to stress OF ANY KIND!  If they fail to respond or do not respond adequately, you may be experiencing adrenal gland fatigue.  Adrenal Fatigue can occur in people of either gender and at any age as a stand alone syndrome, or it may accompany another chronic health problem.  It can also develop as a result of taking corticosteroids.

The following are some of the most common symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue, having one or more would suggest that you need to further investigate.  This can be done with simple saliva hormone tests.

    *   Unexplained fatigue, especially during the morning hours
    *   Trouble getting up in the morning, even when you go to sleep at a reasonable hour.
    *   Feeling run down or overwhelmed, most of the time
    *   Experiencing Low Blood Pressure
    *   Decreased Sex Drive
    *   Immune weakness, or an inability to bounce back from stress or illness
    *   Insistent craving for salty snacks
    *   Experiencing reoccurring afternoon lows
    *   Being a "night person" or feeling best after about 6 p.m.
    *   Experiencing reoccurring bouts of mild depression

There are many simple life style changes a person can make to help combat adrenal fatigue such as taking extra antioxidants, including supplements that support liver detoxification to help rid the body of built up environmental toxins.  Avoid exposure to airborne chemicals such as perfumes, colognes and hair sprays.  Avoid the use of products containing fluoride and aluminum laureth sulfate.  There are many great herbs and essential oils that can help with this problem.  Take the time to ask and research!

Be very conscious of the times of day that you eat.  Always eat breakfast before 10 am and lunch between 11 and 11:30 a.m. then observe an early dinner hour between 5 and 6.  Be sure to finish your day off with a high protein, high quality snack shortly before bedtime.

Regular check ups with your dentist are very important.  Unresolved dental problems, even simple tooth decay that goes unchecked and unresolved are a common source of stress.  Remember that the B vitamins nourish and protect the nerves especially when combined with vitamin C, magnesium and zinc.

Get regular exercise!  When you are tired and stressed, exercise may be the last thing that appeals to you, but exercise is known to decrease depression and help to regulate the body's hormone levels.  It doesn't matter what you do, just do something.  Don't overtax the body in the beginning!  Something as simple as deep breathing in the fresh air while bending and stretching is a great way to get the body started.

Rediscovering your health and vitality can present challenges, but the result are well worth the time and money spent.  For more great ideas and information go to http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/

The Muscular Marjoram

The Marjoram plant is a bushy perennial herb that grows mostly in the dry and sunny regions of the Eastern Mediterranean.  It has long been used for its culinary as well as its medicinal values.  The Essential oil of the of the Marjoram plant is extracted from the leaves and the flowering tops by a process of steam distillation.  It is a thick, pale yellow liquid and has a warm, slightly spicy scent that many people find very comforting.

Essential oil of Marjoram is used to treat stressed out muscles and joint pain due to over exertion, rheumatism and many types of arthritis.  Marjorams oil's sweetly spicy aroma strengthens the whole body. and can help to relieve symptoms of physical exhaustion and nervous tension.

The primary components of Essential oil of Marjoram have a long lasting, relaxing effect on the muscles of the body which make it a great choice for such things as headaches, menstrual pain, muscle cramps arthritis and rheumatic pain as well as swelling in the joints.

Some great recipes for these conditions are as follows:
Headaches,  Cool compresses made by adding 3 drops of Marjoram oil, 2 drops of Lemongrass oil &   1 drop of Peppermint oil  into a large bowl filled with 3-4 cups of cool water.  Dip a cotton cloth in the mixture, wring out the excess and apply to the back of your neck.  If you choose to use the compress on your forehead, be careful not to get in or too close to the eyes as the peppermint can irritate them.
Muscle Cramps,  To help prevent muscle soreness and cramps after a workout or hard labor you can make a massage oil by combining 3 drops of Marjoram oil, 3 drops of Clary Sage oil, 3 drops of Helichrysum oil & 3 drops of Black Pepper oil with 1-2 ounces of sweet almond oil or any other of your favorite carrier oils.  You can then massage the blend into your muscles as often as needed.  This blend will also help reduce pain caused by strains and sprains.
Menstrual Pain,  To ease the discomfort associated with this type of muscle cramp you can combine 3 drops of marjoram oil with 2 drops of Clary Sage oil and 3 drops of Jasmine oil into 1 cup of Epson's Salts or Sea Salt, stir well!  Pour the mixture into your running bath water and then soak for about 20 minutes.
Peaceful Sleep,  To promote peaceful and restful sleep, add 5 drops each of Marjoram oil, English Lavender oil and Cedarwood oil to an aromatherapy lamp or diffuser and let it burn in your bedroom for an hour or two before you retire.

On an emotional level, Marjoram oil is especially valuable during the grieving process, as it can comfort and relax both the body and the mind.

Baking Soda?! How Easy Is That?!

I found a really awesome article about the use of baking soda to fight the effects of the flu! Why is it that totally accredited information gets pushed under the carpet and swept aside for over 100 years? Oh, I forgot simple easy remedies don't make huge amounts of money! Read this and prepare to stare in shock and wonder “The proven value of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda as a therapeutic agent is further evinced by the following evidence of a prominent physician named Dr. Volney S. Cheney, in a letter to the Church & Dwight Company:

“In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the ‘Flu’ with the U. S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely any one who had been thoroughly alkalized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalized early, would invariably have mild attacks. I have since that time treated all cases of ‘Cold,’ Influenza and LaGripe by first giving generous doses of Bicarbonate of Soda, and in many, many instances within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated. Further, within my own household, before Woman’s Clubs and Parent-Teachers’ Associations, I have advocated the use of Bicarbonate of Soda as a preventive for “Colds,” with the result that now many reports are coming in stating that those who took “Soda” were not affected, while nearly every one around them had the “Flu.”
Further more the article went on to state this Testimonial:
My father was a veterinarian and as far back as I can remember (I was born in 1938 so my memory goes back to maybe 1943) he would take sodium bicarbonate dissolved in a full glass of warm water whenever he felt a cold coming on. I don’t remember him ever coming down with a full blown cold. He would treat my cold symptoms likewise and I responded equally as well. He also treated farm animals for various illnesses with sodium bicarbonate via a gastric tube and they recovered quickly. So I’ve known about the benefits of sodium bicarbonate from early childhood on. Glad to see that its benefits are being more widely touted. Although my father was a doctor of Veterinarian medicine, he sometimes referred to himself as an MD (Mule Doctor). Dr. David B Winter, DO"

This is all very valuable information coming from the horses own mouth, the Arm and Hammer Baking Soda Company, which sells aluminum free baking soda. Clearly they knew what they had in their hands one hundred years ago; and its long use in medicine sustains the companies published medical views:
“Besides doing good in respiratory affections, bicarbonate of soda is of inestimable value in the treatment of Alimentary Intoxication, Pyelitis (inflammation of the pelvis of the kidney), Hyper-Acidity of Urine, Uric Acid disturbances, Rheumatism and Burns. An occasional three-day course of Bicarbonate of Soda increases the alkalinity of the blood, assists elimination and increases the resisting power of the body to all Infectious Diseases.”

Magnesium chloride is the only form of magnesium that has been reported to increase immune system strength though all forms of magnesium need to be counted in this regard. When one adds magnesium chloride to ones baths, puts it on the skin like suntan screen, or takes it orally with sodium bicarbonate one supercharges their defensive perimeter or what is called the anti-pathogen factor in Chinese Medicine. Add Iodine, Selenium, Vitamin C and some healthy sun exposure or Vitamin D and we have the heart of army we need to array against viral invaders. Magnesium Bicarbonate – Ultimate Mitochondrial Cocktail is the name of one of my chapters that explains why both these essential mineral ions need to be present in sufficient concentrations.

Take 6 doses of 1/2 teaspoon to half a glass, or 4 ouces of cold water at two hour intervals during the first day of flu symptoms. take four doses at the same intervals on the second day. the third day take two doses in the morning upon rising and in the evening before going to bed. thereafter take each morning until flu is gone.

If you are using this recipe as a technique to help your body detox and cleans, and return to an alkaline ph then you could back it up to 3 doses daily for the full 7 days.  Stop for 15 days and then repeat if needed ONE MORE TIME then stop for 50 days before repeating the orginal dosage and days.
Please do not follow this for longer than 7 -10 days it could reverse the effects!

Sowing Wild Oats

Many people possess a wide range of talents and inclinations, but are unable to cultivate a sense of purpose.  As a result they tend to squander their energies in all directions and will sometimes put off making valuable commitments.  This is the true meaning behind the old expression; "sowing wild oats", the the folly of growing a weed instead of cultivating a valuable grain.
Using wild oat in the form of essential oils or floral waters can help bring inner clarity to these types of personality.  A lack of clarity about what to do with one's abilities can often be associated with a lack of personal confidence in making decisions.  This wonderful herb, or grass strengthens this confidence and reduces sensitivity to outside influences.  It can also be very helpful for a "midlife" crisis, when people may feel they've missed something or chosen the wrong path in life.  Wild oat essence is indicated for people who cannot seem to choose a focus from their many interests and inclinations.  It can also promote feelings and actions of a calmer more clear certainty.
Start by blending 2-3 drops of the essence with an ounce of purified water and ingest 4-5 drops of the mixture 4 times daily.  It should be noted that fresh, small batches are more preferred over large ones.
Power to the Flower of Wild Oat!

The Power of the Mind

The practice of using focused mental images and sensory perceptions to affect the health and well being can be traced to the traditional healing arts in both Egypt and India, however Western medicines did not seem to take imagery very seriously until the 1070s when some American doctors began using imagery to support medical treatment for cancer patients.  The results were impressive;  The patients who visualized successful cancer treatment and the ability to return to good health were found more likely to be able to feel better quicker and live longer than those patients who did not "see themselves doing so."  Since then, studies have documented that such body functions as heart rate and blood pressure respond to mental images.  Just as your moth waters when you think of a lemon, or your pulse quickens with the thought of a stressful event, you can also affect other body responses.  Imagery can help you to boost immunity, manage pain and ease stress; these, in turn, can benefit a wide range of health conditions.
Mental imagery has a profound effect on the hypothalamus in the brain, this is the gland that controls the nervous and endocrine systems.  Since those systems regulate such body functions as blood flow, heart rate, blood pressure, brain waves and the release of chemicals and hormones in the body, mental images can affect all of those functions.  Imagery can help produce a state of calm, decrease pain and enhance immunity.
Imagery can be very eeffective for depression, pain, anxiety, headaches, asthma, skin ailments, immune disorders, high blood pressure, allergies, fatigue, menstrual and menopausal problems and cancers.
Below are some simple steps for successful imagery:
1.   Set clear goals for yourself.  Break down large goals into small, manageable steps.  Develop ideas and methods to move from one step to the next.
2.   Create a precise image of one of your goals in great detail, as if it has already become a reality.  See yourself basking in the happiness and success of having already realized your dream.
3.   Concentrate on your image.  Set aside 15-20 minutes at least once a day, but try for twice a day to visualize your dream.  Fill it with details, until a mental movie is playing before your eyes every time you think about it.
4.   Engage all of your senses.  To make your imagery even more vivid, ask yourself the following questions;
      A.  What aromas are associated with my goals?
      B.   What are the temperatures and weather?
      C.   What skin and body sensations do I feel?
      D.   What sounds do I hear?
      E.    What flavors do I taste?
      F.    Am I motivated to be happy in these circumstances?

It is best to clearly define what you want to change in your life, on both a physical as well as an emotional level.  Then develop some mental images along with sensations, sounds, smells and tastes that will suit or harmonize with those needs.
Healing my be defined as a miraculous unfolding of the consciousness for one's being in the world.  When we learn who we are, what and who really matter to us and how to properly express ourselves is when the ultimate healing journey begins.  It is a slow passage and should be a unique journey for each individual.  It can be filled with risk, triumph, danger, and joy which when nurtured will grow into peace, trust, awe, reverence, love and tenderness.  Tapping into the deeper levels of our intelligences we connect with our greateer sense of wholeness/wellness.

HAPPY IMAGING!

An Amazing Tropical Grass

Cymbopogon Flexuosus is the botanical name for species of Lemongrass from Western India that is used to make Essential Oil.  Lemongrass has long been an important part of the traditional Indian Medicine known as Ayurvedic.  This amazing oil is both cooling and stimulating to the body as well as the mind.  It has powerful antibacterial and analgesic properties (pain relieving) which makes it a useful remedy for bruised muscles and ligament tissue that has suffered trauma.  Lemongrass has the ability to also support the digestion as well as helping to regenerate connective tissues and ligaments.  It dilates the blood vessels and strengthens vascular walls.  Another great thing about Lemongrass is that it has the ability to promote lymph flow, creating proper fluid motion and it will reduce inflammation.  Lemongrass has anti-fungal properties.  Many use Lemongrass to help promote psychic awareness and purification, it can create the innocent perspective of a child while helping to express great wisdom.  When used with Myrrh, it will promote growth and positive changes both spiritually and physically.

A wonderful furniture polish that is effective and completely non-toxic to both people and animals is to blend 3 Tablespoon of apricot seed oil and about 10 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil together

A green, non-toxic insect repellent recipe is to blend 4 drops each of Lemongrass, Cedarwood and Geranium Essential Oils together in 1 ounce of vodka which can then be sprayed liberally throughout the home or office without damaging furniture or plants.

The fresh, ciruslike fragrance of Lemongrass Essential Oil can dispel stale air such as cigarette smoke, pet odors and unpleasant kitchen scents.  Try combining with Essential Oil of Lime, Lemon and Tangerine for a clean, crisp aroma that will improve and invigorate the air quality in any room.

TAKE CARE!  Because of its high citral content, Essential Oil of Lemongrass may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.  Avoid being in the sun for about 6 hours after using Lemongrass on the skin.  If you have been diagnoised with glaucoma DO NOT use this oil at all.

Patient but Potent, Patchouli Oil

Patchouli, with its pungent aroma, was popular in the 1960s among the "hippy" or "peace and love generation.  Found in most of the common buring incense of that time period, Patchouli was believed to stimulate the dreaming brain and open the door to sweet and exotic visions.  Many people used this pungent aroma to cover up the smells of other burning "herbs"!  Unfortunatly, many people think that they do not like the smell of Patchouli because of some of these various reasons but I have found that when I introduce them to a pure form of the Essential Oil of Patchouli they are pleasantly surprised.  This is because most burning incense of Patchouli is a synthetic form, meaning that it is a chemical reproduction or at least a simple fragrance grade oil that can include solvents and additives during the distilling process.
Pure, theraputic grade Essential Oil of Patchouli has as many uses as it has characteristic scents.  It can be described as musty, exotic, spicy, sweet, earthy as well as sensuous.  This herb is native to Southeast Asia and has a wide range of effects on the body.
Patchouli can be very effective against athlet's foot fungi and because of it's therapeutic properties is is wonderful for aiding in skin care.  This wonderful oil can relieve sore, cracked and allergy-inflamed skin, helping to keep the skin toned while also helping to regenerate injured skin tissue.  This pungent oil loves to play nice with sweet almond oil, rose hip seed oil and extra virgin olive oil.
Patchouli oil can be mentally energizing and yet it does not overstimulate the body physically.  It simply releases neurotransmitters that help the Amygdala (in the brain) control your moods and feelings of general well being.  Patchouli is also a good "grounding" oil, with its woodsy, earthy scent, it is no wonder that    Patchouli oil has a reputation for keeping us centered, focused and in touch with our true feelings.  It helps to keep our feet firmly planted on the proverbial ground.
To help tone and firm the skin, add 3-4 drops of Essential Oil of Patchouli to 1 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar, to 2 Cups of warm water.  Stir gently and moisten a cotton pad in the liquid and generously apply to your face in the morning and in the evening after your normal cleansing routine.  Leave the mixture on to air dry.

Set Your Affections On Things Above

It is very important as human beings to remember that holding on to painful memories is not being true to your personal self worth.  Our spirits are designed to be present in the now!  We want and need only the freshest and most valid information, the input that is uplifting and full of encouragement.  When this type of input is readily available to us we are then able to efficiently find answers to our question and solutions to our problems.

Think about it.  When we take the time to do anything worth while we seek for the best, right?  To create an amazing meal we need the freshest ingredients, when writing a research paper we look for the newest most reliable sources of information.

Finding joy in everyday living should be the exact same formula.  Look at the now, see the cup as half full instead of half empty.  Listen only to those thoughts and feelings that are full of reliable truth about who you are and what you want to accomplish in your life.

By setting your affections on things above you are always looking up!  Um something for me to think about.

The Limitless Essential Oil of Lemon

Used to treat colds, flues and other infections, essential oil of lemon can also be a great help in digestive upset and poor appetite.  Essential oil of Lemon helps to activate the immune system and will promote blood as well as proper lymph circulation.

Every herb or essential oil can be said to transmit a "message" to the psyche and lemon oil is no exception.  The clean, fresh message of Lemon is "I am here to bring sunshine back into your life!"  This wonderful, aromatic fragrance generally clears the mind and helps to banish gloomy thoughts.  Lemon oil can help to dispel fatigue by improving circulation and strengthen the body, especially after an illness.  Mixing 3 drops of the essential oil in 1 teaspoon of agave nectar or honey and then ingesting every morning is a great way to use this wonderful oil.

After a long hard day at the office, or school give yourself 30 minutes to unwind and relax by blending 1-2 drops of lemon with 1 drop of peppermint or spearmint essential oil in a cup of cool water.  Dip a cloth into the mixture.  Lie down and drape the compress across your forehead and temples.  BE CAREFUL to NOT allow mixture to come in contact with the eyes.  Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.  Within that 30 minutes you should begin to feel refreshed and renewed.

Adding a 3 drops of lemon and 1 drop of peppermint to a 24oz bottle of pure water is a great way to aid in digestion as well as gently cleanse the liver and help balance the production of bile.

Essential oil of Lemon can also be a great additive to dishwater.  Add about 10 drops to 1 oz of distilled white vinegar, then add the mixture to your dishwater or even your dishwasher.  The lemon-vinegar mixture works especially well to cut grease on glasses and the kitchen will have a great uplifting aroma.

TAKE CARE!  When the skin is exposed to direct sunlight, lemon oil has been known to cause pigment spots.  Therefore, use caution!  Do not use lemon oil or toiletries containing citrus essential oils within 6 hours of exposureto the sun.

The Sampson of the Vitamin Kingdom

So here is a note that I posted on my facebook account a year ago.  True then, equally true now!

The Sampson of the Vitamin Kingdom
The humble yet powerful vitamin C is sometimes over-rated and yet more often over-looked as a valuable and necessary part of every person’s life. The biological effect of vitamin C only lasts for about six hours and so we need to constantly be replenishing this essential vitamin. Most people know that inadequate body levels of vitamin C can cause scurvy causing bleeding under the skin, bruising, bleeding and swollen gums, anemia and general weakness and many people know that higher levels of vitamin C can help in the prevention of colds and flu as well as elevating the body’s ability to fight cancer. But very few people seem to understand that the body needs extra vitamin C to help accelerate the healing of wounds both accidental and surgical. Vitamin C will help detoxify from certain drugs and other harmful chemicals such as nitrites. Vitamin C helps in the formation of natural steroid hormones, it utilizes iron in the body and helps to regulate the metabolism of cholesterol. This fantastic vitamin helps to maintain normal brain activity for good mental health and memory functions. Most people know that stressful conditions over a period of time will create dangerous body reactions, but adequate levels of vitamin C will help the body deal with stressful conditions.
Keep in mind that smoking can severely deplete your vitamin C levels, as will the use of aspirin, antibiotics, cortisone drugs and oral contraceptives. Your diet and lifestyle can also affect your vitamin C body levels. It has been shown that individuals use up their body’s store of vitamin C much faster when confronted by disease or distress and the resulting lowered body levels of this vitamin seem to aggravate any existing illness or anxiety which will then cause a vicious cycle.
Many scientists question the adequacy of the recommended amounts for the average person because of increasing environmental issues which cause high levels of physical and mental stress. They feel that much larger doses are necessary to combat these issues. One symptom of doses that are too high would be extremely loose bowels, unexplained rashes, reoccurring headaches and possible insomnia.
What then is the function of vitamin C in the body? Just as red blood cells carry oxygen to the individual cells of the body, so vitamin C carries hydrogen which is a substance necessary for the proper burning of our foodstuffs and this vitamin is necessary for the health of our connective tissues, the substance which binds all the individual cells together, composes cartilages, veins, ligaments and so forth. If this substance is not in good repair, many disastrous consequences may result. Vitamin C also helps form collagen, which in turns strengths blood vessel walls.
The precious minerals such as calcium and phosphorus which our body needs for so many functions are stored in our bones until they are needed. If not enough vitamin C is present, the tissues of this storage place will not retain the minerals and they are then lost to us.
Finally, vitamin C is a powerful agent against the infections that constantly plague us. An individual who gets over and above his daily quota of this vitamin will not be subject to as many infections.
The recommended dosage for an average adult is 1,000 mg. daily & the daily recommended dosage for a child is 60 to 100 mg.
Essential Oils that are high in vitamin C or that help the body to absorb this powerful vitamin are those in the citrus families, as well as the rose family. Most of these oils can be used internally, like lemon, grapefruit, sweet orange and rose hip

An Inexpensive Flu Remedy

S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely any one who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks.
Dr. David B Winter, DO

Reposting

For the next few blogs I intend to repost some of my notes from facebook, just to get my energy and thoughts into a new realm.  So if you have already seen these, I apologize in advance.  If you haven't then I hope you enjoy.

A Great Question

A wonderful question to ask when talking about natural and alternative health is; “Has nature proven it’s self to be intelligent in taking care of business?” For instance let’s talk about our digestive system and the natural hydrochloric acid that is produced by the body. You are not what you eat, more directly you are what you are able to absorb and health care practitioners will tell you that even if you have the best dietary habits known to man you cannot sustain good health if hydrochloric acid, or common stomach acid, is missing. There is no way for your body to absorb vital nutrients from you foods if this essential part of your digestive system is destroyed by antacids, or if you were born with a genetic tendency to low stomach acid.
Nature did not put acid into our stomachs for the sole purpose of providing drug companies the ability of earning billions of dollars every year by suppressing that stomach acid. Hydrochloric acid is absolutely necessary for good health. It is designed to reduce the toughest steak into broken down “meat soup” within about an hour. Now use your imagination to determine what would happen to that steak in your stomach without the help of the acid to break it down……. It must then break down by rotting! Indigestion, bloating, “egg burps”, burning, gas and belching must then begin in order to help move digestion along. The body is so busy trying to digest and break down the meat that it does not have the time or the ability to absorb many nutrients from it. If these scenarios happen often, warning symptoms of malnutrition and slow starvation begins to manifest. The resulting symptoms can be crumbling bones, degenerative diseases, acute and chronic infections which can be caused by germs that would easily be killed by normal stomach acid. When your stomach has normal acid levels it is able to kill invading micro organisms and can break down dangerous food additives. But if your stomach lacks this vital acid element, additives can turn into cancer causing nitrosamines.
Two prominent American doctors, Jonathan Wright, MD and Lane Lenard, PhD have written a superb book, “Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You” which is highly recommended by alternative health care providers. If you think you may have acid indigestion and have been taking drugs to suppress it. The book outlines exactly what to do in order to heal your stomach from the damage anti-acids have done.
Many people are born with low stomach acid, or they develop it in childhood. Children should have an abundant supply of Hydrochloric Acid but children today are stuffed with an appalling amount of junk food, dangerous soy products and the worst kind of oils that their poor little bodies have to metabolize. Is it small wonder that increasing numbers of children have recurring infections of all kinds, miserable skin conditions and asthma. Doctors Wright and Lenard explain in their book how the children, who are brought to the Tahoma Clinic in Washington, get over some of these dreadful afflictions by improving their diets and supplementing their Hydrochloric Acid levels.
A simple supplementation to safely increase proper levels of Hydrochloric Acid is the use of apple cider vinegar. Using one tablespoon of the vinegar in an 8 ounce glass of water before every meal can improve many of the symptoms that we have been talking about.
Did you know that low production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is associated with hardening of the arteries, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and even tendencies for obesity? Doctor Wright warns about this in his book “repairing Your Heart and Arteries”
So to recap the situation, when you eat, if your Hydrochloric Acid is low, your stomach will hold food longer, and whatever acid is present will mix in with the food. Your stomach will begin to churn, but because it doesn’t have acid, instead of emptying its contents into your small intestines, some of the food will regurgitate into your esophagus. Then because your throat is not protected against acid with the same mucosal barrier as your stomach, your throat will begin to burn. If you treat this burning with anti-acids, the burning will stop, but you will perpetuate the problem.
A good warning is the fact that many anti-acids virtually eliminate acid in the stomach around the clock, what this means is that natural, necessary assimilation of food does not take place, and you will then slowly starve to death.
“ . . . .there is no doubt that acid suppression promotes bacterial overgrowth and that bacterial overgrowth promotes production of carcinogenic nitrosamine compounds. There is also no doubt that acid suppressing drugs increase the progression and severity of atrophic gastritis in people with such things a H. pylori infections, and that atrophic gastritis is a major risk factor for gastric carcinoma.” Carcinoma means cancer! (Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You)
One other thing to consider before ingesting your anti-acid; “antacids, drugs which so many people take frequently, are so dangerous that they would have been removed from the market if the drug cartels were not so strong. It has been known for decades that they deplete the bones of between 130 and 300 mg. of calcium each time they are consumed. They contain aluminum, and also contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease” This quote is according to the professional journal, “Orthopedic Surgeon”
